Jay has been in the CSRA since 1995 when he was hired by the CBS affiliate in Augusta. It was there where he worked Morning and Midday forecasting the weather that the community grew to know him and enjoy his forecasting. He has been honored with a Georgia Association of Broadcast Award for excellence on-air and helped win the station other awards for various promotions.
Jay took a breather from television and left in 2004, when he served as Director of Public Relations and Research at Paine College in Augusta. It was a year later that Jay decided to return to the career that he loved and missed, and joined WAGT-TV. He is best known for his feature segment on NBC, “Where in Augusta is Jay Jefferies?” and continues to educate and inform the viewers with his weather forecasting and reporting.
Jay began his broadcast career in radio broadcasting and worked in various markets before his move into television. He has covered active weather from tornados to snow and ice storms in Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina.
He has also worked for Accuweather in State College, Pennsylvania where he got a chance to hone his skills in installing weather systems, teaching other meteorologists, and even forecasting nationally for Accuweather on-air from State College and from MSNBC in New York.
In addition to weather, Jay loves his community and hosts several events all over the CSRA. You can see him hosting scholarship pageants or even serving as a grand marshal in parades. He has also landed roles in local stage plays. Jay also provides weather forecasts on radio in Augusta and for several special events around the United States. He enjoys, travelling, golfing, and spending quality time with his family.
In May 2014, people begin to wonder, “Where in Augusta is Jay Jefferies”, when he disappeared off the air for six months. He fell ill and after weeks of tests, a diagnosis was made and he had to undergo a heart valve replacement. Jay now shares his story in speeches and uses his experience to bring awareness to nurturing a healthy heart.
Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Jay and his wife Bonita and their children, Jaida and Jaden live in Augusta with their beloved Pepper, a rescue from S.P.C.A in Aiken, SC.
