UPDATE: May 30, 2013

Friends of NBC 26, I must say, we are overwhelmed and humbled by the amount of love that's coming our way.  So much so that I felt a need to let you know we really appreciate it.  The place just ain't the same without Jay Jefferies around the newsroom.  He keeps us on our toes and definitely smiling.  I wanted to update this original story and address some of the key questions we're getting.

Many of you have asked what's "specifically" wrong with Jay.  It's certainly a fair question to ask.  Because people's health is highly personal, I hope you'll understand that we feel it's best to let Jay share that information, should he choose to do so.  It puts our friend in charge of his privacy.

The other big question: "when is Jay coming back?"  My quick answer is always "not soon enough"!  Trust me when I say I don't think anybody wants to be back here more than Jay himself.  He loves what he does and misses it as much as we all miss him.  We hope to have Jay back in the next few weeks.

Lastly, many of you want to know how to get in touch with him.  Here's what we listed below.

If you like to offer your best wishes, thoughts, prayers, support – you can visit Jay's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NBC26Jay).  Just click "Like" and let him know you're thinking about him.  And we've got a new cover photo and we're asking our friends on Facebook to use it as their cover photo as a sign of support.  On Twitter, just share your thoughts with the hashtag #IHeartJay.

If you'd like to send a card, we'll make sure it gets to Jay on your behalf.  Just send it to:

Jay at NBC 26
1336 Augusta West Parkway
Augusta, GA 30909

And email works too – we're always happy to hear from you at HereForYou@nbc26.tv

In the meantime, we can't tell you how much Jay and his family appreciate your love, prayers and support.  I hope you know, we do too!

It's great to be Here for You each and every day, but we definitely appreciate that you're also Here for Us.

It's a question we are definitely used to hearing.  "Where's Jay"?  And every time it's asked, the answer usually involves some community event where he's entertaining a crowd and hugging fans (while mugging for their cameras, of course).  We're talking long after his normal eight hour workday.  And that doesn't include the hours he puts in forecasting the weather or helping cover severe weather with the rest of the team on NBC 26.

Today we answer that popular question with this un-popular answer: "the hospital".  Jay is being treated for an illness.  And while we'll let Jay decide how specific he wants to be when he returns, we can tell you that after weeks of feeling unwell, a team of specialists was able to solve the mystery of "why".  And to them, speaking on behalf of Jay's co-workers and longtime friends, we say "thank you VERY much".

Now begins the road to recovery.  And you can bet your last dollar that Jay WILL recover.  I've never met anyone who loves to work for others (on camera and off) as much as him.  He is, in large part, the inspiration for our positioning statement "Here for You" ‘cause the man not only lives it, he inspires all of us to, as well.
