UPDATE: The Berkeley County Coroner's Office has released autopsy results in the death of Ashley Kaney and her daughter, Riley.
Riley Burdick died of asphyxiation by strangulation. Her death has been ruled a homicide. The autopsy of Ashley Kaney is still pending toxicology and microscopic tests.
UPDATE: According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the man suspected of killing 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and her 8-year-old daughter, Riley Burdick has been arrested.
Kaney's boyfriend, 22-year-old Jacob Theopholis Philip, was arrested Wednesday in Virginia Beach on unrelated charges. While in custody, he confessed to killing Kaney and her daughter. Philip is being held in Virginia Beach, awaiting extradition to South Carolina.
News 2 has learned that Jacob Philip, the man investigators are searching for in connection to the homicide investigation, works at the US Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston.
Philip is an active duty member of the US Navy. Jacob's rank is Petty Officer 3rd Class.
Lieutenant Commander Victor Garza is the Executive Officer of the Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston. He says that Philip is wanted for questioning by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
Garza says his office will support the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in their investigation. He was not able to release any information about Philip's status at work, or whether or not he has not shown up for work as scheduled.
The Berkeley County Coroner's office has identified the names of the two bodies found inside a Summerville home Tuesday.
According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and her 8-year-old daughter, Riley Burdick were found in separate beds around noon Tuesday.
A social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to 302 Kershaw Road after the little girl had been missing from school for two days.
When no one answered the door, the social worker called the Berkeley County Sheriffs Office. Authorities responded to the home around 11:30 Tuesday morning and found the bodies.
Neighbors were surprised when they heard what happened.
"I've lived here for 23 years, and it's a quiet neighborhood," Paul Thomas said. "It's a very nice neighborhood. We've always felt safe. We never thought something like this would happen next door."
Thomas lives next door to the crime scene. He said that he has seen a few people going in and out of the home but said they mostly kept to themselves.
Bill Salisbury, Berkeley County Coroner, said the deaths are being investigated as a homicide, but he would not discuss the cause of death or how long the victims had been dead.
News 2 has learned that the home's owner has rented out the home. According to public documents, two of the renters are Jacob Philip and Ashley Kaney. Our sister station in Augusta, Ga, WJBF, said that friends have reported that Kaney and her daughter have been missing for two days.
An affiliate station in Knoxville, Tennessee reports that Berkeley County Sheriffs are looking for Philip who may be traveling to Washington or Virginia. Officials declined to comment on that report, and have not officially named Philip as a suspect.
Officials say more information will be released throughout the day.
BCSD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Thompson released the following statement in response to the deaths:
"This is an unspeakable tragedy. On behalf of the district, I offer my condolences, and our hearts and prayers are with Riley's and Ms. Kaney's loved ones and the entire Sangaree community."
