HEPHZIBAH, Ga. -
A school assembly turns into a surprise welcome home for a second grader at Jamestown elementary.
Little Christina Schubert had a Christmas big Christmas wish this year. All she wanted was to have her dad home from Afghanistan, "She was was real disappointed. Every time I would ask her what I could get her for her birthday or Christmas, she would say "All I want is you."
Two weeks before Christmas and just four days before his daughter's birthday, Sgt. Donald Schubert is home safe and sound with his family, and it seems like everyone around Christina was in on the secret.
Jamestown staff member, Diona Smith organized the whole ordeal, "We did not tell the student body at all. It was top secret, it was hush hush. The staff knew, but not the students. It was a hard secret to keep."
Her parents, teachers and family friends helped out, even Christina's school principal, Dr. Jamie McCord, "It was beautiful. I think Christina is still shocked. My kids are just ultimately amazed at what just went on."
After Sgt. Schubert surprised Christina, her classmates and teachers surprised him with cards and even a cake, "Just being here. Being away for the holidays, there are a lot of people out there that aren't with their families so all I can do is thank God that I'm here. It's truly special that I'm going to be here for her birthday and Christmas."
McCord said, "Our tradition has always been that we honor soldiers. We always do. Any time we can bring them in."
A welcome home celebration that will lead into a very happy birthday and a very merry Christmas for Christina.
